Makati Medical Center

Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) is a 600-bed tertiary hospital located at the heart of the country’s primary central business district. It is committed to deliver quality and compassionate service through its highly skilled and board-certified physicians. A testament to its standard of care is its accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI). The Section of Infectious Diseases was formally recognized as a section of the Department of Medicine of MakatiMed in1987. The Section was headed by Dr. Thelma Tupasi (1987 to 2004), Dr. Vilma Co (2005-2013) and currently by Dr. Janice Caoili. The Infectious Disease Fellowship training program accepted its first fellow in 1987 and is accredited by the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases since 1987. The Infectious Disease fellowship training program is a 2-year program, with an optional 3rd year for clinical research. Due to the variety of services offered by the hospital, the fellows-in-training are able to get the needed clinical and laboratory exposures required to gain the knowledge and expertise in the field of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. Infectious disease consultants with varied expertise in the field of infectious diseases directly supervise the fellows. Since 1988 the training program has graduated 18 ID specialists. MakatiMed’s Center for Tropical and Travel Medicine (CTTM) provides a multidisciplinary approach in the management of persons with travel-related infectious diseases such as malaria, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).  As a DOH accredited HIV treatment hub, fellows are able to actively manage persons living with HIV and are also involved in teaching basic HIV management among health care workers in the hospital. The Cancer Center, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and Hemodialysis units provide the fellows learning opportunities to treat immunocompromised patients. The medical, surgical, neurological intensive care units of MakatiMed provide a venue for the fellows to apply best practices in the management of critically ill patients with infections. Fellows also have the opportunity to manage patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). True to its aim of being the Hospital with a Heart, the MakatiMed Health Service Program caters to indigent ambulatory care patients and in-patients. This program allows the fellows to improve their ability to treat patients with limited resources, and to prioritize management of infections in a cost-effective manner. MakatiMed ID fellows are part of the Infection Control Committee (ICC) and they rotate with the Infection Prevention Control Department. The fellows discuss relevant infection control topics in the monthly ICC meetings, conduct teaching activities such as Basic Infection Control lectures to hospital staff, participate in drafting infection control policies and its implementation, participate in developing antimicrobial recommendations based on the analysis of the hospital antibiogram, and they also participate in active surveillance of key performance indicators of the ICC. Fellows play a significant role in the hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship program by reviewing requests on the use of restricted antimicrobials. MakatiMed has a fully equipped microbiology laboratory. Fellows gain direct experience with diagnostic bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, and molecular biology. The hospital’s clinical microbiology laboratory uses Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry for microbial identification allowing for faster turnaround times in detecting infections. All training programs at MakatiMed are under the Division of Medical Education and Research (DMER), a monitoring body to oversee the training of young doctors at MakatiMed. All fellows receive a monthly stipend from the hospital, complete with benefits.
